Darwin Symphony Orchestra

The Darwin Symphony Orchestra, conductor Martin Jarvis and concert master Spiros Rantos gave the first performance of Transmutations (for full orchestra) in Darwin's Civic Park on July 1st 2009.This world première was preceded by the three other Darwin works and so also formed the first complete performance of all four stages of Age of Wonders in one concert.

The occasion celebrated a number of anniversaries including that of Charles Darwin, the orchestra, local choir and theatre group.Under the planning and inspiration of Alex Ben-Mayor it took the form of a large-scale multi-media event in which theatre, mime, and lighting was designed to follow the music.

Attended by the Shadow Minister of the Arts, Alderman, Mayor, and over 1,000 people, the celebration also marked the commission of a series of bell-sculptures by Anton Hassell. Set in bronze, these are designed to allow the public to write short pieces to be played on the bells. But also included is a bust of Charles Darwin and a casting of The Beagle bell - this was rung to introduce and close the Beagle string quartet.
