An
international fusion of leading classical
musicians premièred Michael's clarinet
quintet in July 2005. David Campbell - one
of the most outstanding clarinetists of
his generation and the celebrated talent
of the Vanbrugh Quartet collaborated for
the new work premiered at MusicFest Aberystwyth.
Funded
by the Arts Council England, the new piece
entitled The Sun and the Moon, is inspired
by the magnificent 'Piramides del Sol y
de la Luna' at the ancient city of Teotihuacán
outside of Mexico City. In conversation
Michael and David found that they had both
visited the site in recent years and were
taken with the imagery that this spectacular
setting conjures up.

The
host for the world première performance
was MusicFest Aberystwyth - an exciting
combination Music Festival presenting concerts
by an international line-up of artists who,
in turn, lead an inspirational summer school
programme coaching the next generation of
elite musicians.
David
Campbell is internationally respected as
a clarinet soloist and teacher. His solo
engagements have taken him to over forty
countries and he has performed with many
leading orchestras including the BBC Orchestras,
the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic,
City of London Sinfonia and English Chamber
Orchestras as well as many from abroad.
David particularly enjoys the clarinet quintet
repertoire which he has performed with many
leading string quartets including the Alberni,
Bingham, Bridge, Endellion, Maggini, Medici,
Sorrel, Schidlof and Szymanowski. His list
of recordings is wide-ranging and he has
broadcast extensively on BBC Radio 3.
The
greatly anticipated new work received much
interest from other British chamber musicians,
including the Allegri String Quartet who
hope to perform the work following its first
performance. David Campbell has also carved
plans to play the work with the talented
rising young quartet Sacconi in the UK as
well as giving the work international exposure.
